ciently difficult, but the marksmen to-day had to contend with a wind that compelled shooting off from eft. to 8 ft at 600 yards, and scores in consequence were not nearly so high as they were in the eliminating stage. A PIQUANT SCENE.
London, May 30. The right of a golfer to refresh him- hole" was discussed before the Royali self with alcohol at the "nineteenth Commission on Licensing,
of the National Golf Clubs' Protection Frank Holroyd, appearing on behalf Association, contended that the exist- ing restrictions as to hours were hard on golfers who might finish a round in non-permitted hours.
He did not think many golfers] claimed entirely to abstain from alcoholic liquor and he thought when a man had taken exercise for two and half or three hours, moderate consumption of alcohol would make! him better able to play another round.' A lady member asked if Mr. Holroyd, vished to make the implication that eople would not play golf if alcoholic efreshment were withdrawn whether!
applied to women golfers.
Mr. Holroyd slowly polished his eye- lasses with a silk handkerchief, but ade no reply. Whereupon a male ember observed: I think he really eans it would be a very good thing women did not play golf." "I cannot let that pass," exclaimed Ir. Holroyd, "sceing that the only erson who has upheld this country at olf is a woman." He was referring o Miss Fishwick's triumph in the Ladies' Championship and the defeat of the British amateur male team in the Walker Cup.
Evidence was also given by repre- entatives of Conservative, Liberal, and Working Men's Clubs, all of hom took objection to the suggestion hat the police should be given the ight of entry.
